The Dessert: Homemade Twix Bars

APC_0406.jpg

If you’re like me, you’ve been spending a lot of summer nights on your couch watching a movie. While I am certainly missing late dinners at outdoor restaurants and backyard parties with friends, I am trying to find fun ways to make nights at home more fun!

At our house, we have been having movie nights — complete with a homemade concession stand. So far, the tastiest DIY candy I have made - in terms of similarity to the original - is this recipe for Twix bars from Rachael’s Good Eats. I even packed them up in a cooler so we could bring them to the drive-in last weekend. If you try this recipe, make sure to send me a picture or post on Instagram and tag me!

Tips from Cooking Curated:

  • While there are a few steps involved, overall the recipe is quite easy.

    • If you are making these the day you want to have them, make sure to start by 2 PM so you have enough time for the chilling steps.

  • Rachael emphasizes using a large, sharp knife to cut the bars so you avoid cracking. I definitely recommend following this suggestion - I used a large chef’s knife!

  • These bars need to be kept in the fridge - otherwise the top layer gets soft quickly. So if you plan to bring these with you to a drive-in movie (like me) or a beach picnic, make sure to pack them in a cooler!

The Ingredients:

For reference, I have provided links to ingredients that may be less familiar to some of you, but all of these ingredients can be found at Whole Foods and most can be found at other local grocery chains or Target!

Flours Etc.

  • Almond flour can be purchased at any grocery store or on Amazon, but make sure that you get a super-fine blanched almond flour and not almond meal (any brand works)

  • Coconut flour can be purchased at any grocery store or on Amazon (any brand works)

Fats

  • Coconut oil can be purchased at any grocery store or on Amazon (refined will not give you a coconut taste, but either refined or unrefined works)

  • Almond butter can be purchased at any grocery store or on Amazon (any brand works)
